Local reaction to Keir Starmer’s resignation

Dorset politicians responded differently to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s resignation. Bournemouth East Labour MP Tom Hayes praised Starmer’s speech as “dignified and honest,” highlighting positive local government achievements. He emphasized ongoing efforts to rebuild trust among local Labour members. In contrast, Dorset Council leader Nick Ireland stressed that simply changing leadership wouldn’t resolve the county’s financial issues, calling for comprehensive changes to funding and priorities. He noted that Dorset has been neglected by past governments, resulting in high council tax burdens. Portland Labour councillor Paul Kimber expressed hope for Andy Burnham as the next Labour leader.
