Martin Stephens, 45, was found naked and unconscious in a burning cell on October 27, 2023, and died six days later from the delayed effects of electric shock. His cell caught fire after he exposed kettle wires and ignited combustibles. Previously on remand for burglary, Stephens had a history of severe offenses, including violent abuse against a vulnerable woman and a homophobic attack. The Ombudsman report criticized prison staff for inappropriate handling during the incident, noting they restrained him while he was unconscious. His death raises concerns about the management of high-risk offenders in Dorset prisons.
