A large ship was seen at Portland Port this morning, photographed by Justyn Ayton. It was joined by RFA Proteus, a Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel aimed at protecting the UK’s underwater infrastructure. Proteus, acquired for £70 million in February 2023, features a moon pool for underwater vehicle access, a 120-tonne crane, a flight deck, and facilities for unmanned operations. The ship has a gross tonnage of 6,133 and a length of 321 feet. It typically operates with 24 RFA crew members and around 60 Royal Navy specialists trained in autonomous systems and underwater operations.
