John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, once a powerful Prime Minister and adviser to King George III, faced public unpopularity, leading him to retreat to the Dorset coast. There, he built Highcliffe House, only to discover its cliffs were rapidly eroding. Refusing to accept the geological reality, he initiated deceptive landscaping to maintain the illusion of stability, ordering his workers to create new paths as the cliff edges crumbled.
