Ex PC Lorne Castle denies assaulting accused shoplifter

Lorne Castle, 47, appeared in Reading Magistrates’ Court on May 27, facing charges of inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent at Castlepoint retail park on June 16, 2022. He pleaded not guilty to harming an alleged shoplifter, who required surgery for a fractured hip. The prosecution claimed Castle, a dismissed police officer, acted to feign heroism to support his appeal against dismissal. Castle’s attorney dismissed these claims as unfounded. The judge ruled that the case could be heard in either magistrates’ or crown court, and Castle chose the crown court, with his next appearance set for June 23.
