The Changing Colours of Dorset’s Blue Pool Lake

The Blue Pool in Furzebrook is a unique, tranquil lake formed by clay mining, renowned for its striking blue or green colors, which vary with light and weather conditions. Unlike other pools, it supports no life and does not decompose due to its high zinc content. The area, historically linked to clay mining since Roman times, transformed into a natural oasis after being abandoned. Once private property, it became publicly accessible when Thomas Barnard opened a tea house in 1934. Today, despite thousands of visitors, the 25-acre area remains peaceful, thanks to its rich surrounding vegetation and clear waters.
