Significant air quality initiative to safeguard Dorset heathlands

A collaboration between BCP Council and Dorset Council aims to protect Dorset’s rare heathlands by addressing traffic pollution through targeted interventions. Between August 2025 and January 2026, 15 trained volunteers collected air samples from 14 heathland sites, revealing ammonia levels exceeding thresholds harmful to vegetation, particularly near major roads. While nitrogen dioxide levels were within national limits, traffic remains a significant source of nitrogen pollution. Mitigation efforts are already underway at affected sites, with data driving future environmental assessments to enhance air quality. Councillors stress the importance of reducing pollutants for wildlife and future generations.
