Dorset Police’s Rural Crime Team has issued a reminder that wild birds, their nests, and eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Disturbing nesting birds, particularly from March 1 to August 31, can lead to parental abandonment and starvation for the young. Offenders may face unlimited fines or imprisonment. It’s illegal to damage or destroy active nests, and public advice includes avoiding hedge cutting or tree pruning during nesting seasons. Ground-nesting birds are especially vulnerable to off-lead dogs. Any disturbances should be reported to Dorset Police at 101 or 999 if in progress.
