Councillor Maggie Fidler was appointed as Mayor for the 2026-27 civic year during a traditional ceremony at Druitt Hall on May 13, alongside Deputy Mayor Sandra Prudom. The event highlighted Christchurch’s traditions, featuring a procession led by the town crier. Outgoing Mayor Viv Charrett reflected on her term and presented a cheque to the Christchurch Carnival. In her inaugural address, Mayor Fidler emphasized enhancing community engagement, communication, and preserving the town’s heritage. She committed to supporting youth initiatives by choosing Christchurch International Scouting as her charity. The ceremony concluded with civic toasts and interactions with the new leaders.
