In May 1993, businessman Asil Nadir escaped from Compton Abbas airfield while facing fraud charges linked to his Polly Peck empire’s collapse. Staff were unaware of his departure, and he flew to France, eventually reaching northern Cyprus. The investigation revealed pilot Peter Dimond assisted in the escape, leading to his 1998 conviction for perverting justice. Nadir, charged with multiple thefts and frauds, failed to appear at his 1993 trial and remained a fugitive until returning to the UK in 2010. He was convicted in 2012 and sentenced to ten years in prison, later dying in North Nicosia in February 2022.
