Eastleigh ex-headteacher avoids teaching ban after conviction

Jeremy Payne, the executive headteacher of Fryern Infant and Junior Schools, was convicted of drink driving after leaving a school disco and consuming two pints of lager. He was pulled over by police on April 25, 2024, with a breath alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit. Though he admitted to the offense, the Teaching Regulation Agency’s panel recognized his otherwise unblemished record, remorse, and contributions to education. They decided not to prohibit him from teaching but noted his actions undermined public trust and raised ethical concerns. He was suspended and dismissed from his position following the incident.
