Isle of Wight RNLI factory to relocate operations to Dorset

The RNLI’s East Cowes factory will close by the end of 2027, transferring production to Poole, which may lead to job losses for its 70 employees. Established in 1963, the Inshore Lifeboat Centre produces up to 80 boats yearly. The RNLI cited changing demand for lifeboats and a need to adapt to modern coastal uses as reasons for consolidating operations. Chief engineer Ross Barraclough acknowledged the impact on staff and pledged support for redeployment opportunities during the transition. The decision arises from expectations that the demand for all-weather lifeboats will diminish, with most rescues occurring closer to shore.
