The government has introduced a new requirement for tenants to reside in social or council housing for at least ten years before qualifying to purchase their homes. Bournemouth East MP Tom Hayes emphasized the significance of affordable housing and retaining residents who grew up in council homes. Labour’s housing secretary Steve Reed criticized a past system that allowed rogue landlords to profit from buying council homes. This change accompanies a record £39 billion investment aimed at building new council homes.
