The Trigon Hill landfill site near Wareham was investigated by the Environment Agency (EA) due to odour complaints affecting local residents. In response, the EA has mandated the installation of a strong plastic cover, or “cap,” over the most odorous areas. Although gas collection systems were previously installed, unacceptable odour levels persisted. Reports of foul smells began in February. Local MP Vikkie Slade noted improvements after recent meetings, indicating that 35 new gas wells have been added. The temporary cap is expected to reduce odours in four to six weeks, with future permanent measures planned. Community feedback will be welcomed if the operator seeks an extension to the site’s capacity.
