Dorset tax advisers cautioned about new HMRC registration rules

Starting in May, tax advisers in Dorset, including solicitors and payroll teams, must register with HMRC if they communicate on behalf of clients. This replaces the previous voluntary registration system and imposes penalties of up to £10,000 for non-compliance. Rick Schofield from Azets warned that many professionals may unknowingly fall under these regulations. All entities interacting with HMRC—such as conveyancing solicitors and payroll staff—will be affected. While individual taxpayers aren’t directly impacted, they may experience disruptions if their advisers can’t meet the new requirements. The digital registration process will include a three-month transition period without a fee.
