New Forest nature project documents over 1,100 species

A two-year conservation project in the New Forest, funded by the £1.3 million Species Survival Fund, focused on enhancing biodiversity across 321 hectares. Led by the New Forest National Park Authority, it involved multiple organizations, including Wild New Forest. Surveys conducted in 2024 and 2025 revealed multiple pine marten sightings, indicating local breeding. The initiative restored grasslands, wetlands, and woods, documenting 28 mammal species, including water shrews and otters. Notably, over 140,000 bat passes and nearly 100 bird species, including priority species, were recorded. New ponds are expected to improve wetland diversity and resilience to climate change.
