Tom Hayes: Renters’ Rights Act a significant advancement

The Renters’ Rights Act, effective May 1, introduces significant reforms to enhance tenant security and fairness. Most notably, it abolishes “no fault” Section 21 evictions, allowing landlords to evict tenants without reason. Labour MP Tom Hayes emphasized that this legislation offers greater stability and protection against unscrupulous landlords, easing the fears of families facing eviction. Additional measures include rolling tenancies, limiting rent increases to once a year with two months’ notice, and banning excessive upfront rent demands. The government allocated £360,234 to BCP Council to support these changes and staff recruitment.
