Government to unlink electricity bills from gas prices

Tom Hayes, the Labour MP for Bournemouth East, has praised the Government’s decision to decouple electricity prices from gas prices, addressing the current system where electricity costs rise with gas prices, despite stable production costs. This change aims to stabilize energy prices by implementing fixed contracts for generators. With over half of Britain’s electricity from renewable sources, the move is expected to enhance price stability and support further growth in renewables. Additionally, the Government plans to increase taxes on excess revenues and extend them beyond 2028, ensuring more funds for households and businesses during price surges.
