The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is collaborating with Dorset Council and local partners to provide antibiotics and vaccinations to young people in Weymouth, Portland, and Chickerell, following cases of meningococcal bacteria. Over 1,800 of 2,500 students at Budmouth Academy and Wey Valley Academy have received antibiotics. So far, there are no further hospital admissions or confirmed cases. In total, 6,500 students aged 11-18 will be offered these medical interventions. Dr. Beth Smout emphasized the importance of recognizing meningitis symptoms and acting swiftly for treatment. Additional antibiotics and vaccination opportunities will be available for out-of-school youth.
