Red Funnel’s PS Princess Elizabeth Recognised in Bournemouth

The PS Princess Elizabeth was built in 1927 by Day, Summers and Company for the Red Funnel ferry service. Named after Prince Elizabeth, she primarily transported holidaymakers and commuters across the Solent. Her service changed during WWII when she was requisitioned as a minesweeper and played a significant role in the Dunkirk evacuation, rescuing over 1,600 soldiers. After the war, she returned to ferry service until modern ferries rendered her obsolete. Retired in 1959, she served various roles, including a floating restaurant, and now resides in Dunkirk as a popular restaurant, maintaining her connection to Southampton’s maritime history.
