Starting September, Coastguard Rescue Officers (CROs) will no longer receive hourly pay due to a Court of Appeal ruling in MCA v Groom, causing concern among service members. An anonymous letter from a CRO’s wife highlighted fears that this shift to volunteer status could compromise frontline services, especially after recent tragic drownings. Issues surrounding inconsistent safeguarding checks within the service were raised, noting that only full-time staff undergo thorough background checks. The Coastguard Association acknowledged the anxiety caused by this decision but expressed gratitude for CROs’ dedication. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency emphasized that this model aims to ensure flexibility and volunteer involvement.
