Dorset Council has received £158 million for transport enhancements through its Local Transport Plan up to 2041. The initial funding phase allocates over £125 million for road maintenance and around £13 million for bus services. While councillors appreciate the long-term funding, they express concerns about its adequacy in addressing existing transport issues, including poor rural bus connectivity, town traffic congestion, and inadequate cycling infrastructure. Questions arise about achieving the plan’s goals without further government investment. Dorset’s highways head, Jack Wiltshire, noted the council receives less bus funding than neighboring areas and is advocating for more support. The plan awaits Cabinet and council approval.
