Business owners claim tourism tax will deter customers

The BH Area Hospitality Association (BAHA) argues that any tourism levy in Bournemouth should provide extra funding rather than replace existing council spending. Amid recent beach disturbances, the BCP Council proposed a visitor levy to manage seasonal challenges. BAHA supports an accommodation levy but opposes a ‘tourism tax’ that diverts funds to non-tourist-related areas. Local business owners worry that such taxes may deter visitors and suggest charging beach users in high-traffic areas instead. MPs emphasize that any levy must directly fund tourism improvement rather than cover general council expenses.
