Bournemouth sees record number of alcohol-related deaths

Between 2022 and 2024, Bournemouth reported 180 alcohol-related deaths, marking a 6% increase and the highest rate since records began, at 15.1 deaths per 100,000. Zaheen Ahmed of Providence Projects expressed concern over these figures, emphasizing the pandemic’s impact on alcohol consumption. Many turned to drinking as a coping mechanism, leading to increased dependency and mortality rates. Caz Anderson from WithYou highlighted the preventable nature of these deaths, stressing the need for a national alcohol strategy and better treatment access, as over 75% of dependent drinkers in England do not receive care.
