MPs call for better fire service funding

On May 20, 2026, Vikki Slade and Liberal Democrat MPs from Dorset and Wiltshire met with Fire Minister Samantha Dixon to address funding issues for the Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, deemed one of the worst funded in the UK. They highlighted that the current funding formula disadvantages rural regions, especially amidst concerns over potential fire station closures. Ms. Slade emphasized the added pressure on public services in rural and tourist areas and expressed commitment to safeguarding fire stations and supporting firefighters. The meeting concluded with a focus on continued collaboration and reviewing the funding structure.
