Labour MP Jessica Toale is supporting a £30 million government initiative aimed at cracking down on high street businesses suspected of facilitating crime, such as money laundering. The program targets barber shops, vape stores, mini-marts, and sweet shops believed to be fronts for illegal activities. Toale emphasized the need for safe and proud local high streets, asserting that honest businesses shouldn’t be undermined by organized crime. The crackdown will involve increased police raids, closure orders, and the establishment of a new High Street Organised Crime Unit to collaborate with various enforcement agencies. This builds on the successful Operation Machinize.
