Slam-door trains, iconic to the British rail system, were widely used in southern England for decades. These vintage carriages, featuring manual doors and drop-down windows, lacked modern safety features, leading to serious accidents in the 1990s. Consequently, railway officials began replacing them with safer trains equipped with automatic sliding doors. The significant transition began in December 2004, as passenger demands outgrew older systems. The last scheduled slam-door train departed from London Waterloo on May 26, 2005, marking the end of an era, though a few lines continued to operate them until 2010, prompting nostalgia among passengers and staff.
