In preparation for the 2012 Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics, a giant deckchair appeared on Bournemouth Beach, capturing local and tourist attention. Standing 8.5 meters tall and weighing six tonnes, the whimsical sculpture was created by artist Stuart Murdoch for Pimms to symbolize a festive British summer. Initially a temporary installation, its popularity prompted calls for its return. By August, the deckchair was officially donated as a permanent attraction, celebrated with free Pimms on the beach. This quirky piece became an iconic representation of summer joy and British optimism, embodying the spirit of that memorable year.
