The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) has praised the guilty pleas of UK yacht manufacturer Sunseeker International Ltd and its US branch for violating the Lacey Act by using illegally sourced teak from Myanmar. This enforcement action is considered significant since Myanmar’s 2021 military coup. Sunseeker admitted to using Burmese teak, paying a $200,000 fine and committing to compliance measures. EIA’s leader noted that this trade supports a military regime linked to human rights abuses. Despite the fine being a small amount compared to yacht prices, it sends a strong message against sourcing teak from Myanmar. The company faces a formal sentencing on August 20.
