Timeliness Concern Raised in Report on Court Custody Facilities

An inspection by HM Chief Inspector of Prisons from March 2 to 14 highlighted significant challenges in court custody operations, including insufficient staff and vehicles for timely detainee transfers. Key agencies need to better address unnecessary custody durations. The report identified eight concerns regarding detainee treatment, including inadequate protection from public view and insufficient mental health support access. Despite these challenges, two-thirds of prior recommendations were partially or fully implemented, indicating progress since the last inspection in 2019. The Ministry of Justice pledged £300 million for improvements, emphasizing the need for ongoing enhancement in the justice system.
