Fewer than one in four shoplifting cases in Dorset charged

MP Vikki Slade highlighted the rising issue of shoplifting in Dorset, asserting it unfairly pressures local businesses. Following findings from Liberal Democrats analyzing House of Commons Library data, she noted that community policing cuts have exacerbated the problem, with only 23% of shoplifting cases resulting in charges. Slade advocates for revitalized neighborhood policing and a visible police presence to deter crime. She also expressed broader concerns over small businesses facing rising energy costs and proposed a VAT cut for hospitality and reform of business rates. Dorset Police aims to support retailers and has seen a 66% positive outcome rate for shoplifting.
