Retail crime within the Co-op has decreased significantly, with overall incidents down by 21%, physical attacks on staff reduced by 31%, and anti-social behavior falling by 36%. The new Crime and Policing Act now classifies assaulting a retail worker as a standalone offense and has eliminated the £200 threshold for theft. Paul Gerrard, the Co-op director, noted that the crime reduction is promising, but more needs to be done. Labour MP Tom Hayes highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by shopworkers and welcomed the new legislation aimed at improving their safety.
