Weymouth town centre could see later pub opening hours if councillors approve two separate licensing applications next week at County Hall.
The William Henry is asking to serve until 2am every day, with an extra 30 minutes from Thursday to Saturday, extending beyond its current midnight finish from Sunday to Wednesday and 1am close for the rest of the week. The application also proposes allowing under 18s to remain on the premises until 11pm instead of 10pm.
The Slug and Lettuce, which is set to be renamed by new owners Amber Taverns, wants to alter the layout of its bar area, remove the kitchen and open from 8am before potentially staying open until 2.30am every day.
Both applications have received objections linked to the licensing aims of preventing crime and disorder and preventing public nuisance. Concerns raised include noise and anti social behaviour, although both venues say they are “well-run” and have exit procedures designed to limit disturbance at closing time.
Weymouth Town Council has now dropped its objection to The William Henry after the pub said it had no plans for late live music. However, a nearby hotel owner said longer drinking hours could “destroy” his business because of the effect on guests.
