Knife crime education events launched

Young people in Christchurch are taking part in a new initiative designed to steer them away from knife crime and build positive skills.

The Skills 4 Safer Streets project brings together Dorset Police and partner organisations to deliver school-based events combining martial arts training, first aid and education about the risks and consequences of carrying knives, with the latest session held for Year 9 and 10 pupils at Twynham School.

Students took part in activities including Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiujitsu while also learning about knife crime, with organisers aiming to challenge the idea that carrying a weapon offers protection and instead promote safer choices and confidence.

Detective Superintendent Andy Bell said the scheme aims to “steer children and young people in Dorset away from knife crime” and address misconceptions, while partners including the fire service and local groups are working together to provide positive role models.

The programme builds on an earlier event in 2025, where 25 per cent of attendees later joined local gyms, and will continue alongside existing education sessions delivered in schools and youth clubs across Dorset.

Organisers say the focus remains on prevention and early intervention to help keep communities safe.
