Dorchester will host a public ceremony on Monday to honour Dorset people called up for service.
The event at County Hall will bring together The Royal British Legion and Dorset Council for the unveiling of a new plaque marking the contribution of men from the county who served under National Service in the Armed Forces.
Veterans who still remember that time are expected to attend, and the ceremony will also remember the 395 men who died and never returned home, with organisers including a reading of The Exhortation and 2 minutes of silence.
Guests due to attend include representatives of the Lord-Lieutenant, the High Sheriff of Dorset, the Chair of Dorset Council, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Dorchester, alongside members of The Royal British Legion, the Armed Forces and other groups.
The service will begin with a welcome, followed by a short history of National Service, while National Service Veterans’ Alliance member Michael Homer will speak about what life was like, before the plaque he donated is unveiled and the National Service Prayer is read.
