Dorset names new Youth Parliament members

Dorset has named its new Youth Parliament members following elections involving a record number of candidates.

Tyler and Jago were elected after 17 students from schools across the county put themselves forward and campaigned, with their priorities including reviewing school behaviour systems and improving support for young people in rural communities.

Anya and Finn were also selected as deputy members through a Single Transferable Vote system used for the first time, with all four receiving certificates at a ceremony held at County Hall in Dorchester.

The group will now develop their campaigns and take part in regional and national debates, working alongside Dorset Youth Council to deliver a Youth Voice manifesto aimed at improving the lives of young people across the county.

Councillor Clare Sutton said the candidates showed “dedication, energy and passion,” adding that “the depth, insight and thoughtfulness behind every campaign have been truly inspiring,” while also recognising all those who took part for strengthening youth democracy.

Young people who stood in the election are being encouraged to stay involved through Dorset Youth Council, supporting ongoing work on issues including mental health, safety, accessibility and transport.
